The Problem

The site slowed down when traffic was heaviest - which is exactly when it costs the business the most. The usual answer is to buy a bigger server, but that turns every bit of growth into a recurring bill, and it hides the real problem rather than fixing it.

The server itself was modest: two CPU cores, 7.7GB of RAM and 29GB of storage running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Nothing about it was wrong. It had simply never been tuned for the application actually running on it, so a large share of what had been paid for was sitting unused while the parts that mattered ran out of headroom first.

What We Built

A measured baseline first, so the work targeted real bottlenecks rather than guesses.
Web server and PHP tuning matched to the traffic pattern the application actually sees.
Database query caching, connection handling and indexing work.
Caching at the application and content layers to cut repeated work.
System-level limits - memory, CPU, network and file descriptors - raised off their defaults.
Security hardening: firewall rules, access controls and patching, done as part of the same pass.
